Music Therapy Lambeth

Who we are?

Music Therapy Lambeth is a registered charity that has been working within the borough of Lambeth since 2005 providing Music Therapy within local schools. We currently have 6 part-time Music Therapists working across the borough in nurseries, schools and specialist centres.

What we do and why?

Music Therapy is the use of music as an agent for personal expression, understanding and change within a supportive therapeutic relationship.

Music Therapy aims to develop a trusting, therapeutic relationship in which a child can express themselves freely and feel that they are being listened to, heard and understood.

Children may be referred to our service for help with:

  • Social Communication issues such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Selective Mutism
  • Emotional problems such as Trauma, bereavement and attachment issues
  • Learning difficulties
  • Physical disabilities

Many of the children referred to our service have A.S.D (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) as Music Therapy can offer an effective intervention in supporting children's development of social communication skills. It also offers a space for emotional self-expression and self-awareness which impacts on a child's ability to engage in education and effective social functioning.

What are the benefits of Music Therapy?

  • Increased communication, interaction, self-esteem and confidence
  • The development of social skills -turn-taking, sharing and listening
  • Development of self-awareness and awareness of others
  • Expressing and understanding difficult feelings
  • Development of co-ordination and motor skills

Where we do it?

Within the school that the child attends. We believe that this highly effective as this is where the children are based. We also run family groups within nursery school and children's centres.

How to access the service?

If you would like to access Music Therapy for your school or child please email us and we will work with you to set up the service.  Children will then be referred to the service by a SENCo or other member of the MDT via our referral form.  We normally have one ongoing project which is funded by the Walcot Foundation and which can be accessed free of charge. This is currently an Early Years Project based within Ethelred, Triangle and Holmewood nurseries.

Other provision can be paid for by schools or by external funding.
